Renowned judges, eminent Senior Advocates, and respected jurists are among legal luminaries that have confirmed their participation at this year’s Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Lagos Branch Law Week holding from 5th to 8th October, 2016. While the high-profile Opening Ceremony holds on Thursday, October 6, 2016 at the MUSON Centre, Lagos, the breakout sessions which promise to be highly intellectually stimulating also hold at the same venue on October 6 and 7, 2016.

CONFIRMED SPEAKERS/FACILITATORS
Among those who have confirmed their readiness to facilitate the intellectual feast are former Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice George Oguntade (CFR); former NBA President, Dr. Olisa Agbakoba (SAN); erstwhile Director-General of the Nigeria Copyright Institute, Mr. John Asein, and Mr. Osaro Eghobamien (SAN).

Other Senior Advocates who have agreed to speak or chair technical sessions during the epoch-making Law Week are Mr. Norrison Quakers (SAN); foremost litigator, Mr. Kemi Balogun (SAN), and Dr. Dapo Olanipekun (SAN). Senior Advocate-designate, Mrs. Funke Agbor has also assured of her attendance.

Aside from the Secretary to the Presidential Advisory Committee on Corruption, Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye and renowned arbitrator, Mrs. Doyin Rhodes-Vivour who will also grace the conference to deliver a speech and chair a session respectively, others who have also confirmed attendance include former IPLAN President, Prof. Bankole Sodipo; leading arbitrator, Chief Gbola Akinola; Messrs Wolemi Esan, Ayotunde Owoigbe, and SAN-designate Dewunmi Ogunsanya, to name a few.

THEME
The theme of the Law Week is “Judicial Independence and the Democratic Process.”

BREAK-OUT SESSIONS

This year’s Law Week is designed to be the best-ever held by the branch. The General Interest and Practice Session promises to be one of the most explosive sessions, as it will tackle the issue of corruption and financial crimes. Renowned jurist Owasanoye will speak on “Financial Due Diligence and Antibribery Laws.” Aside from the Executive Director of Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON), Mr. Kola Ayeye who has accepted to chair the session, discussants include the fiery Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ibrahim Magu; former Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase and the commercial attachees of both the United States and British embassies in Nigeria.

Other topics to be traversed at the breakout sessions include “Emerging Trends in Copyright, Computer Software and Trademarks;” “Mergers, Acquisitions and Strategic Alliances: The Role of a Lawyer;” “Aircraft Leasing and Global Jurisdictional Issues;” “Port Regulations and Infrastructure in Nigeria,” and “Business Development in a Changing Legal Market.” Aside from the Bar & Bench Forum on “Combating Money Laundering: The Roles of Lawyers and the Judiciary” to be chaired by the Presidenig Justice of the Court of Appeal, Lagos, the technical sessions will also witness a much anticipated session by the branch Young Lawyers Forum, coming on the heels of a Mock Arbitration jointly orchestrated by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK) and the Lagos Court of Arbitration (LCA).

Activities billed for the Law Week include visits to Ikoyi and Kirikiri Prisons, novelty football match amongst male and female lawyers at the Campus Stadium in central Lagos, Young Lawyers Picnic at Muri Okunola Park, Victoria Island, high-profile Independence Dinner at the Shell Hall of the MUSON Centre, Lagos and an exclusive Elders’ Night to be hosted by business mogul and Chairman of MNET Nigeria, Chief Dewunmi Ogunsanya.
