Count Down to the #NBA2017AGC: The NBA Re-Ignites Lawyers’ Passion as AGC Draws Near


Its Seven (7) days to the #NBA2017AGC and the drumbeat of the Conference is sounding at a reverberating crescendo. Every lawyer is getting set for the biggest and most anticipated Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) conference ever. Every prospective delegate has marked their calendars for what promises to be a most intriguing and transformational NBA Conference.

The President of the NBA, Abubakar Balarabe Mahmoud, OON, SAN jumpstarted the process on Thursday, June 22, 2017 at the NBA Ikeja Branch Secretariat Auditorium, where he unveiled the #NBA2017AGC; further to which the ever charismatic Chairman of the Technical Committee on Conference Planning (TCCP), Professor Koyinsola Ajayi, SAN unfolded details of the great expectations from the NBA 2017 AGC.

Come 18th to 24th August, 2017, Lagos Africa’s most populous city and Nigeria’s commercial capital, will play host to lawyers and global industry leaders for the 57th edition of the Annual General Conference (AGC) of the NBA. The conference which is themed “African Business: Penetrating through Institution Building” will take place at the Landmark Event Centre in Lagos, Nigeria under the distinguished leadership of the NBA President A.B. Mahmoud, OON, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former Attorney General of Kano State.

A cross section of pioneers and influencers drawn from government, business, professional services, and the academia from around the globe will be at the conference to anchor sessions, discuss cutting edge issues and have lively debates on the various angles of the conference theme. The 2017 Annual General Conference will feature about 31 conference sessions which will vary widely in style and cover most sectors and practice areas, providing conferees the opportunity to focus on their areas of interest.

Discussions on institution building and acceleration of economic development and social justice in Africa will dominate this year’s conference which will be declared open by the Acting President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, GCON.

Leading talks at the conference are heavyweights such as the former Prime Minister of the state of Georgia, Nika Gilauri; MD, Goldman Sachs Africa, Colin Coleman; Global CEO Consultant, Ram Charan; Nigeria’s and Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, amongst others.

The retinue of distinguished speakers and panelists include Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu; Honourable Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun; Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta; Finance Minister of Ghana, Ken Ofori-Atta; Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, CON; Attorney-General and Minister for Justice of the Republic of Ghana, Gloria Afua-Akuffo and AMCON CEO, Ahmed Lawan Kuru; amongst others.

Also expected at the conference are the Head of Branding Consultancy in South Africa, Attorney General of Ghana, Heads of Ghanian, Zambian and Kenyan Bars, representatives of leading law firms in Ivory Coast and Cameroon, Professors from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T), Princeton University, and former INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega amongst others.

Delegates will gain practical insight into the latest developments in legal and socio-political developments, which lawyers can key into to improve their practice. Sessions will focus on various thought provoking and interesting topics such as “Energizing institutions, “Women Leadership”, “Legislation”, “Institutionalising African Investments”, “Military Business”; “The Business of dispute resolution” and “Life after Law”.

The session “Nigeria’s Hidden Weapons: Generation X” will turn the spotlight on the leaders of tomorrow, and the significant role they play in institution building and development. In addition, young professionals (100 of whom have been sponsored to the conference by the NBA President) will be educated on the various means by which they can unlock their untapped potential to be assets to organisations and businesses worldwide.

Thomas International and PCL will be leading a working session on how to successfully conduct these psychometric tests, during the Conference and precisely on Monday, 21 August, 2017 at 10.30am.

Another interesting feature of this year’s conference is the elimination of the challenges that come from onsite registration. All registration and conference material collection will be done before the event. The Tablets will be delivered o the Registrants at designated pick-up locations in their respective states and cities.
