A 40-year-old man, Omoniyi Olakunle, who allegedly collected N4 million from four men on the pretext of selling 33, 000 litres of petrol to them, was on Monday brought before an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The accused, whose address could not be established, is facing a charge of fraud.

Police Prosecutor Clement Okafor told the court that the accused committed the offence on Feb.18 at about 8.30 a.m. on Ile Ife-Ilesa Expressway, Osogbo.

Okafor said Olakunle fraudulently obtained the sum of N4 million from the complainants —  Akintola Akinjole, Omotayo Blessing, Akintola Gowon and Akintola Kayode  — with the promise to sell about 33,000 litres of petrol to them.

The accused did not supply the petrol and also failed to refund the money, he said.

The offence, he noted, contravened Section 427 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2003.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty and his lawyer, Mr Abimbola Ige,  urged the court to grant him bail on liberal terms.

Ruling on the bail application of the accused, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs Fatimoh Sodamade, granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 and one surety in the like sum.

Sodamade said the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and also produce evidence of tax payments to the government.

The case was adjourned to April 17 for hearing.
