The alleged defilement of a 15 year old by an ex commissioner in Cross River State has continued to generate reaction from right groups and the general public. Read Story here The International Federation of Women Lawyers, (FIDA) Cross River State chapter have joined their voice in condemning the alleged act and asking for justice to be done on behalf of the victim. In a statement issued by the spokesperson of FIDA, the action of the ex commissioner was condemned in strong terms.

The International Federation of Women Lawyers, (FIDA) Cross River State, condemns in strong terms the defiling and damaging of the uterus of a 15 years old girl in Calabar by Barrister Edet Okon Asim, an Ex-Commissioner for Information and currently, a Special Adviser to Governor Ben Ayade on Biodiversity.
Edet Okon Asim is currently in police custody for allegedly continually defiling the underaged girl for about 3 years now . The girl, who was aged about 12 when the defilement started, was “forced” into aborting twice for Mr. Asim, which has led to her uterus being punctured while in the process of carrying out the third abortion.
A case of child defilement and sexual abuse is an inhumane act and a social illness that must be addressed otherwise the future Nigeria will be made up of abused individuals who suffer from depression, aggression, substance abuse, personality disorders, relationship phobia, suicidal tendencies, sexually transmitted diseases etc. We must ensure that this heinous crime is eliminated from our society.
