The Nigerian Bar Association Section on Legal Practice-SLP Annual Conference with the theme: Re-Thinking and Re-Tooling Legal Practice for the Challenges of our time began today with an opening ceremony in Port Harcourt.
In his welcome address, the NBA President Mr. A.B Mahmoud SAN noted that this year’s theme could not have been more apt given the current circumstances and challenges being faced by the legal profession.
“The legal profession is today facing all kinds of threats. We are facing stiff external competition in an increasingly globalized environment.”
“We are confronted with new frontiers of knowledge and technology that are continually reshaping a new world. With our weak regulatory environment, poor curriculum in law faculties and weak entry requirements into the profession leading to an exponential growth in recent years, it means that we are unable to respond adequately to these challenges.”
“ We are thus failing to offer to Nigeria and Nigerians a capable and competent legal profession that can meet the demands of modern democratic society and economy.”
According to the President, this means that serious attention must be paid to reorganizing and re-tooling the legal profession to face these threats and challenges.
Governor of Rivers State His Excellency, Ezenwo Nyeson Wike led other dignitaries to the opening ceremony
High point of the opening ceremony was the presentation of an artwork to the Governor on behalf of the Nigerian Bar Association, for his immense contributions to the NBA at the NBA-SLP Conference in PortHarcout.
The painting was done by Johnson Uwadinma, a contemporary Nigerian artist known for his paintings and installations that features tessellating hues and multiple textures. Uwadinma is a product of Rivers State and works and lives in Port Harcourt.
