Poetic Side: Ode to the Laity – Bolaji Ramos

Sociologists. Psychologists.
If you are not lawyers, you are lay!
We code your theories,
And reject your luxuries.
If you are not lawyers, you are lay!

Philosophers. Geographers.
If you are not lawyers, you are lay!
We flesh up your arguments,
And empower your instruments.
If you are not lawyers, you are lay!

Anthropologists. Criminologists.
If you are not lawyers, you ain’t learned!
We redefine soil and culture,
And bring about legal nurture.
If you are not lawyers, you ain’t learned!

Adventurers. Voyagers.
If you are not lawyers, you ain’t learned!
We draft your gazette,
And influence what is on set.
If you are not lawyers, you ain’t learned!

Legislators. Administrators.
If you are not lawyers, you ain’t noble!
We draw up your documents,
And your wills and testaments.
If you are not lawyers, you ain’t noble!

Elizabeth of England. Mary of Scotland.
If you are not lawyers, you ain’t noble!
Ours is the real nobility,
And true test of credibility.
If you are not lawyers, you ain’t noble!

We claim sole learnedness
And kingly nobility.
But when diseases strike our happiness
We run to the laity!
And when we are put to test of integrity,
We perform less than the laity!
