NBA-SBL begins Banking, Finance Training for Young Lawyers


Determined to assist young lawyers hone their legal skills in the field of banking and finance, the Nigerian Bar Association Section on Business Law (NBA-SBL) has launched the Banking & Finance Academy in an event in Lagos.

NBA-SBL Chairman, Seni Adio (SAN) said the event, which was organised in partnership with International Lawyers For Africa (ILFA), was in line with the Section’s objectives to build capacity for Nigerian lawyers across various specialisations and sectors of the economy.He said: “The programme is made up of practical and interactive modules, with a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of banking and finance law and will thus keep young lawyers in tune with the modern practice of law as it relates to banking and finance.

“As business lawyers, it is important to enhance the capacity of our young lawyers in the area of commercial law practice, to ensure they become specialists and not just generalists,” the NBA-SBL Chairman said.The academy opened with a three-day specialised training for over a 100 young Nigerian lawyers with interests in banking and finance practice.

In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the NBA-SBL Banking & Finance committee, Dr. Tominiyi Owolabi, made a case for legal expertise in banking and financing processes, stating that, there was need to ensure the younger generation of lawyers in Nigeria were equipped with the requisite skills for purposes of financing.

In her remarks, ILFA’s executive director, Cynthia Lareine expressed excitement at the collaboration with the NBA-SBL, stating that both organisations have had a long and rich history of partnerships, with Nigerian lawyers being the largest beneficiaries of all ILFA programmes within African jurisdictions. According to her, these benefits, include, internships and programmes for secondment.

In closing, the ILFA director described Nigeria as a fantastic place with some of the most established and sophisticated law firms across Africa, which according to her has continued to attract international interest.
