An Ekiti State Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital has sentenced a 20-year-old girl to two weeks community service for faking own kidnap in order to exhort money from her parents.

The court held that the community service would be supervised by the Ekiti State Judiciary Chief security officer.

The Police in Ekiti State had last Thursday arrested the girl identified simply as Mary(20) for allegedly faking her own kidnap on August 9, 2020, with a view to extorting money from her parents.

The state Commissioner of Police, Tunde Mobayo, said the lady was “arrested alongside her accomplice, Victor(18) in Akure, the Ondo State capital, where she had gone from Ekiti State to carry out the act.”

The commissioner said Mary’s mother “came to our station and reported that her daughter, Mary Idris, left home on August 9, at about 4 pm and never returned.

“She said all efforts to reach her daughter via phone calls proved abortive. After a while, the younger sister of the suspect received a message through her phone that Mary had been kidnapped and demanded ransom to be paid to Access Bank Account number 11233209688.

“The command’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad operatives tracked the phone number that sent the message to Akure, Ondo State, where Mary was arrested alongside her accomplice, Victor Olawuse.”

Giving her verdict on Monday, Magistrate Adefunke Anoma said, “This again is sadly a sign of high moral decadence in the fabric our society.”

Anoma, who sentenced Mary alongside her friend Victor also recommended two weeks of counseling exercise for the duo to be supervised by the Court Registrar.

Mary had explained that she went to her boyfriend in Akure, “for fun but lack of fund for transportation to Ado Ekiti made me sent the alarming message of kidnapping to my parents.”

The two exercises are to run simultaneously and report back to court at the expiration of the said two weeks.
