The President of the Nigerian Bar Association(NBA), Mr. Paul Usoro SAN has said that the One year free Law Pavilion Subscription initiated to assist young lawyers has no link howsoever with the NBA Covid-19 Palliatives. He started
The clarification became necessary against the backdrop of publications online suggesting that the Law Pavilion subscription is part of the NBA Covid-19 palliatives.
The false online report reads:
“The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, has commenced the distribution of COVID-19 Palliatives to young lawyers who are members of the Association.
As part of efforts to reduced the hardship occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic on young lawyers, the NBA under the leadership of Paul Usoro SAN constituted a palliative committee to accept donations from philanthropic members. The Committee received more than 80 million Naira in donation to young lawyers.
As part of the Palliatives, the NBA has partnered with leading legal technology firm, Lawpavillion to give young Lawyers one year free subscription of Lawpavillion online law report to aid their practice.”
Stating the true position, Mr. Usoro in a chat with DNL Legal and Style correspondence stated:
“Law Pavilion subscription isn’t linked howsoever to Chief Babalakin SAN’s Committee or the assignment of that Committee. The Committee members learnt of the Law Pavilion Partnership for the first from my Release to NBA members. Law Pavilion was entirely my idea for young lawyers.”
Speaking further, Mr. Usoro noted that the Babalakin led Committee has not completed it’s assignment and as such, distribution of palliatives has not commenced.
“Babalakin Committee hasn’t completed its assignment. A little over N90m has been raised by the Committee. Disbursement is yet to be carried out. By the way, in my Release constituting the Committee, I emphasized the need for the scheme to cover the most vulnerable amongst us who are most affected by the blistering consequences of Covid-19. By definition that could extend beyond young lawyers. The specifics are being worked out.”
“For avoidance of doubt, Law Pavilion scheme is not paid from the Babalakin-Committee funds howsoever.”
