The International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, has welcomed its first ever Students Associate members with the induction of female law students into its membership by the Imo State Chapter of FIDA.
The induction took place during the FIDA Imo State Annual Conference which was recently held in Owerri, the Imo State capital. The association also inaugurated the FIDA IMSU Student Desk.
A statement by the FIDA Imo State Chairperson, Mrs. Ndidi Anike-Okeoma, on the inauguartion reads:
“Without prejudice to Subsection 1 of this section, a Law Student may be admitted as a Student Member of the Organization on payment of a prescribed fee…” -S.7 (2) of the Constitution & Uniform Bye-laws of FIDA NIGERIA
As part of our activities marking the FIDA IMO WEEK, we inaugurated the FIDA IMSU STUDENT DESK at the Faculty of Law IMSU and had the students inducted. Winners of our short impromptu test were decorated as FIDA IMSU AMBASSADORS for the year 2023.
This is the first of its kind in FIDA NIGERIA and this student desk will serve the entire university as student victims of sexual harassment can now make their complaints and the same routed through to FIDA IMO.
One of the newly inaugurated Student Associate of FIDA, Chinaza Nlemedim a law student of IMSU expressed her joy thus:
…I became a registered Student – Associate of FIDA NIGERIA, IMO STATE and today, the inauguration took place at The Conference Hall, Rockview Hotel, Owerri.
FIDA is the acronym for the Spanish name “Federación Internacional dé Abogadas”
which translates to “International Federation of Women Lawyers”. This implies that FIDA NIGERIA IS A NON-GOVERNMENTAL, NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION MADE UP OF WOMEN LAWYERS WHICH WAS FORMED IN 1964 and its primary role is to protect, promote and preserve the rights of women and children in Nigeria.
My utmost gratitude goes to the Hon. Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Imo State, C.O.C. Akaolisa Esq (SAN), Chairperson of FIDA IMO, Ndidi Anike Esq and the other Legal Silk of FIDA IMO for creating this forum for the Law students of Imo State University.
