201 Inmates Trained by PRAI’s Rehabilitation & Skill Acquisition Workshop

Date:

Prisoners Right Advocacy Initiatives is a brain child of  Mr. Adetola Kazeem which has consistently focused on the welfare and rehabilitation of prison inmates. PRAI is not relenting on its effort towards ensuring that prison inmates are given second chance to life.

In a recent skill acquisition workshop held between 15th -17th of May, about 201 inmates and officers of Kirikiri Female Prison were trained in various skills such as  events planning and decoration, making perfume, air fresheners, hair cream, finger foods (small chops), Ankara bags and jewelries etc. The participants were issued valid certificates of completion thereby getting them ready to be reintegrated into the society.

Commenting on the just concluded training, Mr. Adetola Kazeem has this to say

“The inmates got to learn events planning and decoration. They were taught how make perfume, air fresheners, hair cream, finger foods (small chops), Ankara bags and jewelries etc. On the request of the DCP, we trained the first set of barbers in the prison how to barb. There will be follow-up training and monitoring to ensure proficiency in the skills acquired.

Dr. Damilola Akinsulire sensitized the inmates about early signs of breast cancer, treated minor ailments and skin infections and gave out toiletries, sanitary towels and mosquito treated nets to the inmates. Onyedikachi Ekwerike, a clinical psychologist spoke to the inmates about dealing with depression and having a positive outlook towards life.

The goal of the program is to ensure that inmates are positively engaged while in prison and have skills that could make them independent and able to earn a living after release.

I appreciate the DCP, Mrs Lizzie Ekpendu for her dedication, enthusiasm and support. I thank all Mandela Washington Fellows, facilitators and donors who ensured the program was a success.”
