Kano CJ knocks judges for abuse of power

Acting Chief Justice of Kano State, Justice Nurudeen Umar, on Thursday in Kano, condemned the abuse of power among some judges in the state.

Justice Umar said this in his office while addressing the newly-elected executive members of the Nigerian Bar Association, Kano State chapter when they paid him a visit.

Umar said, ‘’The lower courts do not sit on time and there are also complaints of bribery and corruption and there is also the general low esteem on attitude, which the public has towards the judiciary. So, in that respect, we feel that we have to work together, we in the judiciary, we and you as the chairman of the NBA, so that we will start making positive changes to serve the public better.’’

The newly-elected President of the Kano State chapter of the NBA, Ibrahim Muktar, stated that the visit was aimed at reaffirming the association’s commitment towards enhancing judicial integrity in the state and in the country at large.

In her remarks, the representative of Partner West Africa, a Non-Governmental Organisation,  Miss Kemi Okinyodu, said the partnership with the NBA would ensure social accountability within the judiciary.

She said, ‘’We have trained observers working with the NBA and the observers are going to be stationed in selected courts. They would sit through the court. They have forms which they will complete and at the end of every three months, we are going to collate and run an analysis and identify where the key issues and bottlenecks are. With the findings, we will engage the judiciary, policy makers and drive a very strong advocacy on judicial reform.”
