Senate Seeks NBA Collaboration on Constitution Review

Date:

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has called on the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, to collaborate with the National Assembly in the ongoing constitution review process.

Senator Akpabio made the call when he received the leadership of the association on a courtesy call in his office in Abuja on Wednesday.

The Senate President said he was delighted by the visit and noted that the National Assembly can benefit greatly from the inputs of the lawyers.

“We have robust plans to tinker with some of the laws that we met on ground, particularly those that are not meeting the current realities. Some of our laws are analogue and do not meet the aspirations of today,” he said.

The Senate President also called on the leadership of the Nigerian Bar association to weed out quacks from its midst in a bid to protect the integrity of the profession.

“There are so many law schools these days. We might not be able to see it the way it used to be. As a lawyer, you must learn both in terms of education and character.

“We must also do a lot to cleanse the profession of quacks. I know it is not easy but we have to. It’s a continuous process, so that we have and know the quality of lawyers that we have in Nigeria. But for us in the National Assembly, we will collaborate with you,” he said.

On his part, the NBA President, Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, noted that the association was ready and willing to lend a hand of fellowship to the Nigerian Senate towards nation building.

Maikyau said the association was proud of what the senate under the leadership of Senator Akpabio had been able to achieve and noted that the visit was to show solidarity to the Senate President.
