At the just concluded PrivCon (an annual privacy conference) held at the Civic Centre, Lagos on the 3rd day of April 2024, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) facilitated a Workshop session titled ‘Guidance Notice from Regulator’s perspective.’
The objectives of the Workshop funded by the UK Nigeria Tech Hub and Tech4Dev are:
- Train professionals and stakeholders within the STI &R ecosystem on the provisions of the Guidance Notice on registration of controllers/processors with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.
- Provide Start-ups and professionals within the STI &R ecosystem with strategies for liaising with the NDPC.
- Provide a platform for Startups and professionals within the STI &R ecosystem to network and collaborate on privacy and data protection regulatory issues affecting the industry.
- Connect professionals within the STI &R space with start-ups and CSOs for ease of service provision and support.
During the Workshop attended by lawyers in private practice and the Ministry of justice, privacy professionals, Start-ups, CSOs, Chiderah Ike-Okonkwo – the Head Innovation Unit of the NDPC made many clarifications on the Guidance Notice from the regulator’s perspective. From the private sector perspective, Dr While Abdullateef Abdul, the Managing Counsel, Goldlex Legal moderated the session, Samuel Ibrahim – a senior manager from Andersen facilitated the other session aimed at providing access to affordable regulatory compliance to stakeholders within the ecosystem.
UK Nigeria Tech Hub and Tech4Dev funded the Workshop in alignment with their anticipated outcomes of convening practitioners, regulators, policy makers, CSOs and start-ups in the STI&R ecosystem; forging partnership and collaborations for development and growth in the STI&R space etc.
