Benin court sentences teenager to 6 years in jail for theft

An Oredo Magistrates’ Court in Benin, Edo State, has sentenced an 19-year old man identified as Happy Okotie to six-year imprisonment for stealing.

‎‎Okotie was jailed along with a 25-year-old man, one Kingsley Ebose, for six years each without an option of fine.

They were convicted by the trial magistrate, Mrs. RacheaI Ogbevoen , after finding them guilty of a two-count charge of breaking in, entry and stealing proffered against them.‎

The offence was said to have been committed on August 25, 201, in New Benin, Oredo Local Government Area.

The Police Prosecutor, Mr. Patrick Agbonifo, had told the court that the convicts had conspired to commit felony on the said date.

Agbonifo said the convicts broke into a store belonging to one Mrs. Tessy Okpebiye at night, where they stole some valuable items.

He listed the stolen items to include one Nokia battery, two Samsung Galaxy phones, one laptop and a cash sum of N17,000.

Agbonifo said the stolen items were worth N235,000.

According to him, the offence contravened Sections 516 and 411 of the Criminal Code, Cap 48 Vol. II, Laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria, 1976, as applicable in Edo State.
