The immediate past President of the Law Students Association of Nigeria (LAWSAN) Mr. Atiku M. Jafar has appealed to the executive governor of Taraba State, Architect Darius Dickson Ishaku to reintroduce bursary to law students from the state to enable them foot their bills at the Nigerian Law School.
Atiku, an indigene of the state and a law graduate made the appeal in a letter addressed to the governor captioned “A Call for Your Excellency’s Earnest Intervention on the Welfare of Taraba State Law Student”
The letter reads in part;
“I wish to draw your Excellency’s attention to the concerns of prospective applicants of the Nigerian Law School from Taraba State.”
“As Your Excellency is aware, the cost of legal education in Nigeria and the exorbitant fees of the Nigeria Law School call for intervention of government, particularly state governments, across the federation to enable average poor and middle class indigenes afford legal education and give back to the society. Tarabans, like their colleagues from other states, used to be beneficiaries of the state government’s intervention in this respect, until prior to Your Excellency’s inception.”
“As it is today, law students from Taraba, unlike their colleagues from other states nationwide, do not benefit from government’s subvention in form of the Nigerian Law School Bursary, and this poses grave threats to the ability of many Taraba law students due for the January 2020 batch to proceed to the Nigerian Law School.”
“Sir, your earnest intervention herein will demonstrate Your Excellency’s commitment to prioritize education as a foundation for sustainable development and will encourage the students, as potential lawyers, to attain this noble academic objective and give back to the state.”
