Edo Guber Election: NBA Election Observers’ Report Highlights Logistical Challenges, Low Voter Turnout

Date:

The Nigerian Bar Association Election Working Group (NBA-EWG), led by Mrs. Bolatumi Animashaun, has released its report on the 2024 Edo State Gubernatorial Election. The NBA-EWG, which was accredited by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to observe the election, deployed representatives from five NBA branches in Edo State to monitor various polling stations.

The group observed a generally peaceful pre-election period, bolstered by a strong security presence. However, logistical issues, such as the late arrival of election materials and personnel in several polling units, particularly in Benin City, were notable challenges.

Despite the state’s 2.6 million registered voters, the NBA-EWG reported low voter turnout at several locations, with many polling units recording less than 10% of accredited voters. Efforts by political party agents to discreetly influence voters with monetary incentives were also flagged.

On a positive note, the NBA-EWG commended the effective use of the Biometric Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the professional conduct of election officials. Security personnel were well-deployed, ensuring a largely incident-free election, though an isolated case of gunfire at Egor LGA raised concerns.

The NBA-EWG recommended that INEC improve the timely deployment of election materials, increase voter education efforts, and implement stronger measures to curb the influence of money in future elections.
