As part of the activities marking the NBA-SBL 2025 Tourism Retreat and Roundtable, participants paid a courtesy visit to the palace of the Olubadan of Ibadan on 9th May 2025. The delegation was warmly received on behalf of His Royal Majesty, Oba Akinloye Olalere Owolabi Olakulehin, by a host of distinguished representatives, including High Chief Senator Safadin Ali Abiodun, the Aremo of Ibadanland, and Mr. Mayowa Owolabi, among others.
The purpose of the visit was articulated by Mrs. Chinenye Oragwu, Chairperson of the NBA-SBL Travel, Tourism and Hospitality (TT&H) Committee, who emphasized the Committee’s commitment to advancing the development of the travel and tourism sector in Nigeria. She noted that the Committee routinely hosts forums, events, and webinars featuring subject matter experts aimed at fostering sustainable growth in the industry.
Mrs. Oragwu further highlighted the success of the inaugural Tourism Retreat and Roundtable held in Abeokuta in 2024, stating that Ibadan was chosen for the 2025 edition due to its rich cultural heritage and historical significance.
Also addressing the royal gathering was Mrs. Pamilerin Akabunwa, Chairperson of the Tourism Retreat Planning Committee, who provided an overview of the retreat’s theme, objectives, and three-day itinerary. The royal chiefs in attendance expressed their appreciation for the initiative and applauded the NBA-SBL TT&H Committee for promoting legal and business engagement in the tourism sector.
In a symbolic gesture of goodwill, Mrs. Enitan Rewane, immediate past Chairperson of the TT&H Committee, presented gifts to the royal hosts on behalf of the Committee and retreat participants.
Following the formal engagement, participants were treated to a guided tour of the historic Olubadan Palace, where they were given an enlightening overview of the traditional succession process to the Olubadan throne. It was explained that the kingship ascends alternately through the Balogun and Olubadan lines, with eligibility reserved for the Mogaji, or male head of a family.
The visit concluded with a lavish lunch hosted at the palace banquet hall, generously provided by the Olubadan, leaving participants with a profound appreciation of Ibadan’s cultural richness and royal heritage. The experience was widely described as both memorable and inspiring — a highlight of the retreat.
