The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has praised Mr. Lawal Garba, a physically challenged lawyer, for his resilience and dedication to the legal profession, which culminated in his conferment with the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).
Justice Kekere-Ekun gave the commendation on Tuesday during a special court session to mark the commencement of the 2025/2026 Legal Year of the Supreme Court and the inauguration of 57 new Senior Advocates of Nigeria.
The CJN applauded all the newly elevated silks, stressing that the strength of the judiciary lies not only in its systems and structures but also in the quality and integrity of those who serve within it.
“In extending my warmest congratulations to the 57 legal practitioners honoured today, I must emphasise that this recognition reflects years of tireless service, unwavering commitment to the rule of law, and outstanding contributions to the legal profession,” she said.
Justice Kekere-Ekun made special reference to Garba, describing him as a source of inspiration.
“Despite his physical challenges, Mr. Garba has exemplified perseverance, dedication, and excellence in legal practice. His achievement is a testament to the triumph of determination over adversity and a reminder that professionalism knows no bounds,” she said.
The CJN further underscored that the conferment of the SAN rank is a rigorous and highly competitive process, symbolising not only professional distinction but also a pledge to uphold ethical conduct and the integrity of the legal profession.
She lauded the new SANs for their participation in the pre-swearing-in induction programme of the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN), noting that the insights shared during the programme will be invaluable in guiding their careers at the highest level of practice.
Justice Kekere-Ekun, however, reiterated her caution from last year’s ceremony, reminding the new silks that the rank is a privilege and not a right.
“The privilege can, and will, be withdrawn in appropriate circumstances where it is abused,” she warned.
Commending the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) for preserving the standards and credibility of the selection process, the CJN assured that the judiciary remains committed to dispensing justice fairly, upholding the rule of law, and safeguarding the rights and freedoms of all Nigerians.
