NAFDAC shuts depot, factory in Kaduna over hygiene concerns

Date:

The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control has shut down an unhygienic depot and sealed a water-based drinks factory in Kaduna.

Speaking to newsmen on Saturday in Kaduna, the State Coordinator of NAFDAC, Mr Nasiru Mato, said in line with the agency’s mandate of safeguarding the health of consumers in the state, they intensified surveillance on the manufacture, distribution and sale of regulated products to guarantee their quality, safety and efficacy.

Mato said that following the 6 intelligence, a team of regulatory officers from the NAFDAC Kaduna State office, led by him, swung into action and uncovered a facility used as a depot operating under unhygienic and poor sanitary conditions for the storage of yoghurt and flavoured drinks before further distribution.

He emphasised that such action was unsatisfactory and unacceptable as it violated standard regulations, adding that under such storage conditions, product contamination is imminent.

He, therefore, said consequently the facility was shut down as the first line of sanctions.

In a similar development, Mato said another surveillance visit to a sachet water and water-based drinks manufacturer also uncovered that both the systems and processes on the ground could not guarantee the quality, safety and wholesomeness of the products.

He emphasized that manufacturers of all classes of regulated products should always adhere strictly to Standard Operating Procedures and Good Manufacturing Practices, warning that any violation would be made to face the full wrath of the law.

It was also reported that NAFDAC shut two Chinese supermarkets located in the Jabi District and eight cosmetics shops at Wuse Market, Abuja, for flagrant violations of extant laws governing the sale, distribution, and labelling of regulated products in Nigeria.
