Justice Binta Fatima Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Hamatu Modu, a key food supplier to Boko Haram in Borno State, to 40 years in prison for his involvement in terrorism-related activities. Modu, who openly admitted in court to supplying food and intelligence to the terrorist group, faced a four-count charge brought by the Federal Government through the office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.
Represented by the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), Modu pleaded guilty to all charges. Justice Nyako initially sentenced him to 10 years for each count, but following a defense request, the court ordered the sentences to run concurrently, effectively reducing his total imprisonment to 10 years.
In a related case, Isah Ali, another food supplier linked to terrorist activities in Borno, was sentenced to 10 years in prison after confessing to his offenses. His sentence was backdated to commence from the date of his arrest three years ago.
Justice Nyako also directed that both convicts undergo rehabilitation and deradicalisation programs after completing their sentences. Additionally, the Federal Ministry of Interior has been tasked with determining the correctional facilities where the convicts will serve their terms.
