Abuja lawyers react to killing of rights activist, Atsuwete

Date:

Reactions have continued to trail  the abduction and  gruesome murder of Mr. Ken Atsuwete a Port Harcourt based right activist who was murdered at his home by suspected assassins.

The latest reaction is coming from two Abuja-based lawyers who described the killing as disturbing and alarming.

One of the lawyers, Mrs Maureen Ajogo expressed shock noting that the killing is quite shocking and disheartening.

She added that the situation calls for renewed efforts to protect lives and property.

“This is a frightening reminder that the hard-won right to seek justice for human right violations is under attack.

“Law enforcement agencies must initiate and lead prompt investigations into this kind of incident to forestall future occurrences,” Ajogo said.

Similarly, Mr Ifeanyi Moses, called for transparent process of investigating and prosecuting those responsible for the act to reassure the people of their safety.

Moses said that Atsuwete’s “undeserved death” had not only come as a shock, but had proved that there were those who stop at nothing to ensure justice was not advocated for.

He, however, called on relevant authorities to get to the root of the matter in order restore the masses’ confidence in the system.

“It cannot be business as usual when cases of killings are emerging from many parts of the country all the time.

“The government should urgently conduct a thorough investigation to ensure that perpetrators are held accountable and these killings must stop.

“To be found dead is a matter that cannot be taken lightly. Government must immediately institute a full judicial commission of inquiry into extra-judicial killings.”

Atsuwete was on Monday kidnapped and killed by unknown gunmen in Ikwerre Local Government, Rivers.
