A bus conductor, Azeez Mustapha, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for allegedly snatching a phone valued at N75,000 in traffic.

The accused, 23, a resident of No. 25, Akala Street, Mushin, Lagos is being tried for conspiracy and stealing.

The Prosecutor, Yomi Egunjobi, told the court that the accused committed the offences on December 21, 2016 at about 7p.m. at the Oshodi/Anthony Express road, Lagos.

He alleged that the accused, with others still at large, snatched an LG phone from the complainant, Fahad Alayomaa, while driving in the traffic.

“The complainant was held up in the traffic on his way home from work and was making calls on his phone.

Suddenly, the accused stretched his hand into the complainant’s car, snatched the phone and passed it to another person.

The complainant raised an alarm for help and the accused was caught by pedestrians,” Egunjobi said.

He said the offences contravened Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Section 285 stipulates a three-year jail term for stealing, while Section 409 provides two years’ imprisonment for conspiracy.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The sureties must include a blood relations of the accused and a community leader or clergy man, with evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government.
