Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, is set to swear in the newest member of the Supreme Court, Justice Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole, on Wednesday, 25 February 2026.
The ceremony will take place at 2:00 pm in Courtroom Two of the Supreme Court complex in Abuja. This appointment comes as the apex court faces a reduction in its bench due to the retirement of several justices who have reached the mandatory retirement age.
Prior to his elevation, Justice Oyewole served with distinction as a Justice of the Court of Appeal and as the Presiding Justice of its Enugu Division. His appointment is widely seen as a testament to the judiciary’s commitment to strengthening the bench with experienced and dedicated jurists, while upholding the rule of law.
Festus Akande, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Supreme Court, emphasized that Justice Oyewole’s legal acumen and integrity will enhance the court’s capacity to deliver fair and timely judgments. He also noted that the swearing-in marks a key step in revitalizing the judiciary and maintaining the highest standards of competence, impartiality, and integrity.
Akande reminded all invited guests to adhere strictly to court protocols and security measures. “The Supreme Court of Nigeria remains unwavering in its dedication to justice, fairness, and judicial independence for the benefit of all Nigerians,” the statement concluded.
