Controversy Trails the Killing of Enugu Lawyer After Delivering Ransom to Kidnappers

Date:

A senior lawyer in Nsukka, Enugu State, Barr Eli Ugwu has been shot dead.

According to reports, the legal practitioner was shot dead in Kogi State shortly after delivering ransom to kidnappers for the release of his cousin who abducted.

There are, however, controversies trailing his death.

The initial report was that the senior lawyer was shot by the kidnappers after delivering the ransom.  a Facebook user, Senator Chijinkem Ugwuanyi who is close to the deceased wrote on his timeline:

“A part of us is Gone! He was shot dead in Kogi state while trying to pay ransom for his kidnapped cousin.

“The story is not clear since yesterday but this is the much we know at the moment.”

However, emerging reports now say Ugwu was shot dead by policemen as he was coming out of the bush, alongside his cousin upon his release by the kidnappers.

A senior lawyer, who does not want his name in print told Daily Post on Tuesday that Ugwu was shot dead by policemen after delivering ransom.

“He has already successfully delivered ransom and was coming out with the victim when policemen shot them.

“Eli was shot dead but his cousin (the kidnap victim), is responding to treatment. It’s a huge blow,” he said fearfully.

Another facebook user from Nsukka Onyekachi C Ugwu Jp claims that he was shot dead by the military in Kogi State while his cousin who he went to rescue sustained gunshot injury.

“Barr Eli Ùgwù was shot by the Military men according to report from Kogi State. He has finished paying ransom for a cousin of his who was kidnapped. On their way out the military opened fire on them. The kidnap victim is said to have sustain gunshot injury but wasn’t badly hurt. Eli was not that lucky.”

Eli, until his death, was a strong member of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Nsukka branch.

The Kogi State Police command is yet to issue any statement on the incident.
