Court Denies Sylva’s Former Speech Writer Bail

Date:

A magistrate court sitting in Yenagoa has rejected the bail of Barr. Jonah Okah, the former Speech Writer to the Former Governor, Chief Timipre Sylva charged with criminal defamation against the Government House Accountant,Mr. Ritchoe Etonye.

The Presiding Magistrate, Pere Boassa, of Magistrate Court 7, explained the bail application was turned down over the likelihood of the accused to interfere in the ongoing investigation into the case against him and for his protection against possible reprisal attacks in public.

Bossa also noted that the bail application was turned down over the possible unrepentant posture of the accused to commit another offence.

Magistrate Bossa, after listening to the argument of the Defence counsel, Abala Prea on the need for bail application as provided the relevant laws bothering on the protection of Fundamental Human Rights, said the decision to reject or grant an accused bail is sorely the discresion of the Court.

Pere Egbuson, the State Prosecuting Counsel, who was represented by Peremobowei Miri, however agreed with the Presiding Magistrate over the rejection of the accused bail application.

The Magistrate however ordered an accelerated hearing on the suit and adjourned the case till 27th and Wednesday,28th next week.
