Court Orders Accelerated Hearing in Musician’s Copyright Suit against BBC

Date:

A Federal High Court sitting in Kano had refused the application of a Kano-based musician, Abdul Kamal, to stop the Hausa Service of British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) from using his soundtrack without his consent.

Justice Muhammad Nasir Yunusa held that it was minded to excercise its discretion to order an accelerated hearing of the substantive suit rather than grant an interim order and make the appropriate order as the justice of the case would require at the completion of the substantive suit.

Kamal sued the BBC Hausa Service for using his sound track in their popular programme, “Daga Bakin Mai ita,” without his consent.

On the argument by both counsel for BBC, Shakiruddeen Mobuluwaji and plaintiff counsel, Bashir Ibrahim as to the processes filed and served on each other, Justice Yunusa, asked the parties to ensure they resolve the issues of the processes filed before the next adjourned date.

The suite was adjourned  to March 20, 2024.
