Defamation Row: Ogunwumiju, SAN, Files N500m Suit Against Dele Farotimi

Date:

Kehinde Ogunwumiju, a senior advocate of Nigeria, SAN, and managing partner of Afe Babalola & Co., has sued Dele Farotimi over alleged false and defamatory statements made in his book, “Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.”

Ogunwumiju, claims the book contains “false, mischievous, and defamatory” statements that malign his professional reputation and that of his law firm. The suit, which was commenced by writ with suit No: FCT/HC/5372/2024, alleges that the publication accuses Afe Babalola & Co of “compromising the integrity of the Supreme Court,” colluding with “crooked lawyers and incompetent justices,” and tampering with a Supreme Court judgment.

Ogunwumiju, asserts that these claims have caused significant harm, including the loss of clients and damage to his standing within the legal profession.

Beyond seeking monetary damages, Ogunwumiju is asking the court to order Farotimi to issue a public apology in two national newspapers and to halt further distribution of the book, which is available both locally and internationally on platforms like Amazon.

Describing the statements as “malicious, reckless, and defamatory,” Ogunwumiju vehemently denies any involvement in judicial corruption, emphasizing his nearly two-decade-long career of ethical legal practice.
