The Court of Appeal in Lagos has upheld the decision of the High Court regarding the Obaship Stool of the Ayangburen of Ikorodu. This judgment, delivered on November 28, 2024, brings to an end at the Court of Appeal a lengthy legal battle that began in December 2014.
The case was initiated by the Lambo Branch of the Lasunwon Ruling House of Ikorodu, challenging the installation of Oba Kabiru Adewale Shotobi. The High Court had dismissed the suit in its judgment delivered on May 27, 2015, citing a lack of merit. The Lambo Branch subsequently appealed the decision.
The Court of Appeal, comprising Hon. Justices Muhammed Mustapha, Zama Senchi, and Ruquyat Ayoola, upheld the High Court’s decision. The appellate court also validated the position of Olusegun Fabunmi, SAN, who represented Oba Kabiru Adewale Shotobi.
This judgment will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the legal landscape in Nigeria as regards chieftaincy authority.
