The Federal High Court, Abuja, has brought to a close the $32.8 million privacy dispute between Meta Platforms, Inc. and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) following an out-of-court settlement between the parties. The dispute arose from enforcement action taken by the NDPC in February 2025, when it imposed a $32.8 million fine and issued corrective orders against Meta over alleged violations of Nigerian users’ data privacy rights through behavioural advertising practices on Facebook and Instagram. After Meta challenged the fine and enforcement measures before the court, both parties reached a negotiated settlement, which was subsequently adopted as the judgment of the court by Honourable Justice James Omotosho.
