The Lagos State Judiciary on Tuesday, September 2, 2025 unveiled the Non-Custodial Sentencing Practice Direction 2025, aimed at reducing reliance on custodial sentences while promoting rehabilitation, crime prevention, and reintegration of offenders into society.
The Non-Custodial Sentencing Practice Direction 2025, signed by Chief Judge Justice Kazeem Alogba, is divided into two Articles and a Schedule.
Article 1 (General Provisions) sets out the objectives, scope, and guiding principles of non-custodial sentencing. It also lists the factors courts must consider during sentencing and outlines the types of non-custodial measures judges may impose.
Article 2 (Miscellaneous) covers revocation and savings provisions, interpretation, and citation.
The Schedule provides the effective date of commencement and carries the Chief Judge’s signature, formally bringing the direction into effect.
