The Employment & Labour Lawyers Association of Nigeria (ELLAN) has released the maiden edition of its Labour and Employment Law Journal, now available for purchase. This groundbreaking publication brings together rich scholarship and practical insights on contemporary labour and employment law issues in Nigeria and beyond.
One of the standout articles is “Institutionalizing the Igbo Apprenticeship System (IAS) for Sustainable Development in Nigeria” by Similoluwa Daramola. Drawing inspiration from the recently released movie Afamefuna: An Nwa Boi Story, the author highlights the unique features of the Igbo apprenticeship system, described by Harvard Business School as the largest business incubator in the world.
Daramola situates the IAS within Nigeria’s legal framework, referencing Sections 49–53 of the Labour Act, which regulate apprenticeship contracts. She compares Nigeria’s practice with international systems in South Africa, Germany, and Australia, where statutory frameworks have strengthened apprenticeship/learnership programs.
Her article concludes with a call for Nigeria to institutionalize the IAS through targeted laws and policies, describing it as an untapped tool for addressing unemployment and promoting sustainable development.
This is just one of the many enriching and thought-provoking contributions in the Journal — a must-have resource for law firms, practitioners, policymakers, academics, and students of labour law.
