The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday hosted a high-level meeting with leaders of Nigeria’s political parties at its Abuja headquarters to present and deliberate on newly drafted electoral guidelines for the 2027 general elections.
The session, chaired by INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan, brought together party chairmen, secretaries, and representatives from across the political spectrum, including Nenadi Usman of the Labour Party and Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Amupitan stressed that the updated guidelines reflect the recently enacted Electoral Act 2026, warning that political stakeholders must adapt to the evolving framework to ensure credible elections.
INEC outlined several key preparatory steps ahead of the elections:
- Continuous Voter Registration (CVR): Online pre-registration begins August 18, 2025, with in-person registration starting August 25, 2025, allowing Nigerians to register or update voter details.
- Voter Register Revalidation: A nationwide audit will remove duplicate entries and deceased persons to strengthen the integrity of the register.
- Technology Integration: Discussions continue over real-time electronic transmission of results to INEC’s IReV portal, a move civil society groups advocate to curb electoral manipulation.
The announcement comes amid growing political activity. President Bola Tinubu has secured the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) endorsement for a second term, while opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and Peter Obi, are reportedly exploring a coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to mount a unified challenge. INEC’s efforts aim to ensure that these contests unfold under a transparent, accountable, and legally sound framework.
