Justice for Bamise: BRT Driver Sentenced to Death By Hanging for Murder and Sexual Assault

Date:

Justice Sherifat Sonaike of the Lagos State High Court, sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square annex, has sentenced Andrew Nice Ominikoron, a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver, to death by hanging.

On Friday, the court found Ominikoron guilty of the 2022 murder of 22-year-old Oluwabamise Ayanwola and the sexual assault of Dr. Anosike Victoria. The conviction followed a five-count charge including murder, conspiracy, and rape, also involving another victim, Maryland Ojiezelu.

Despite pleading not guilty to all charges, the evidence presented convinced the court of his guilt. The judgment marks the conclusion of a case that shocked the nation and intensified public outcry over the safety of women on public transportation.
