Lagos Prominent Citizens Propose Landmark Reforms in Memo to Senate on Constitutional Review

Date:

A coalition of prominent Lagos State citizens has presented a landmark memorandum to the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Constitutional Review, proposing sweeping reforms aimed at advancing true federalism, fostering economic autonomy, and safeguarding the rights of indigenous communities.

Signed by respected figures such as Chief Sunbo Onitiri, Alhaji Mutiu Gbajumo, Prof. Abisogun Leigh, and Bashorun JK Randle, the memorandum calls for Lagos to be recognized as a standalone megacity-state. Citing its economic significance, cultural heritage, and projected status as the world’s third-largest city by 2025, the coalition advocates for Lagos to operate with the same autonomy as international cities like Hong Kong, with a focus on maximizing its growth potential within a restructured Nigeria.

Among the suggested reforms, the group proposes amendments to the legislative lists, granting states more control over local matters and enabling coastal states to manage their own ports and resources. They also push for an independent state police force, free from political interference, and a localized judiciary with authority over state issues, including land and tenancy matters.

The coalition further urges the formal recognition of Lagos’ 57 Local Government Areas, a process begun in 2003 but yet to be completed. Given the environmental and infrastructural challenges associated with Lagos’ booming population, the group advocates for federal intervention funds to support the state’s extensive responsibilities as Nigeria’s economic nerve center.

Other distinguished members supporting this memorandum include Dr. Aderemi Desalu, Odofin Layi Ogunbambi, Oloriekun Uthman Shodipe Dosunmu, Mr. Adedeji Idowu, Mr. Kola James, and Mr. Imran Shitta-Bey. Together, they represent a united call for a Nigeria that empowers its states, with Lagos at the forefront of national and regional growth.
