A Jos Chief Magistrate’s Court on Monday sentenced a 40-year-old driver, Sani Abubakar, to 40 months in prison for driving recklessly and causing the death of a middle aged man.

Abubakar, of Tudun Alaranma, Madawaki Ward, Doma LGA of Nasarawa State was charged with a  six counts charge of reckless driving and one count charge of causing death.

The magistrate, Mr Jovita Binjin, sentenced Abubakar, after he pleaded guilty to the crime and begged for leniency.

“I hereby sentence you to 32 months in prison for the offence of reckless driving or an option of N28, 000 fine and 8 months in prison for the offence of causing death or an option of N8, 000 fine.

The convict in his plea said; “I did not do it intentionally, my brakes failed me while I was approaching a very busy road, I tried to control the car and avoid oncoming traffic but couldn’t.

“Have mercy on me, he pleaded,’’.

Earlier the police prosecutor, Sgt. Thomas Amuku, told the court that the accused was arrested and taken to the “A” Division Police Headquarters for reckless driving and causing the death of a man on June 29.

Amuku said that the accused person drove a Dangote Howo Truck with Reg. No. DKD 62 XA in a reckless manner along Zaria Bye Pass by Bingham University Teaching Hospital, which led to an accident involving four tricycles, two cars and a motorcycle.

He said that one tricycle rider identified as Ishosu Shie, of Dogon Karfe, Jos, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the Bingham University Teaching Hospital for treatment while the man riding the motorcycle lost his life.

The prosecutor added that the man on motorcycle killed by the convict was later identified as Cpl. Abubakar Hassan of 53 Division, Army Barracks, Rukuba, Bassa LGA. He said that the offence contravened the provision of sections 27 and 29(1) of the Road Traffic Act.
