Meta Platforms Inc. and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) last month entered into Terms of Settlement that were subsequently adopted as a consent judgment by the Federal High Court.
By the terms of the settlement, the NDPC waived the administrative fine of USD 32.8 million earlier imposed on Meta and released the company from all obligations and liabilities arising from a Final Order which had found Meta liable for violating the privacy rights of more than 61 million Nigerians.
The consent judgment has since generated significant legal and public policy debate, particularly around data protection enforcement, regulatory accountability, and consumer rights in Nigeria.
In response, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Data Protection Committee will be hosting a webinar bringing together leading legal practitioners and digital rights advocates to examine the legal, regulatory, and public interest implications of the settlement.
