Mfon Ekong Usoro Launches Landmark Book on International Trade and Maritime Law

Date:

A major milestone in the development of legal and commercial literature in Nigeria will be marked tomorrow with the formal presentation of International Trade and Carriage of Goods by Sea: Texts, Cases and Materials, a seminal new work authored by renowned maritime lawyer and administrator, Mfon Ekong Usoro.

Scheduled for 10:00 a.m. at Harbour Point, Victoria Island, Lagos, the event promises to be a significant gathering of legal, academic, and maritime industry stakeholders. The book spans over 600 pages and provides a comprehensive exploration of the legal, operational, and commercial dimensions of international trade and sea carriage, with a unique fusion of Nigerian and international perspectives.

In what has already been described as a definitive guide for legal practitioners, judicial officers, bankers, exporters, importers, shipping companies, and academics, the book fills a longstanding gap in locally relevant literature in the field.

Commending the work, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, CFR, Chairman of Access Holdings Plc, called it “a comprehensive guide and an indispensable resource for professionals seeking to understand and navigate the complexities of this specialized field.”

Funke Agbor, SAN, FCIArb, and President of the Nigerian Maritime Law Association, noted that the book is “the culmination of [Usoro’s] extensive experience and knowledge,” praising its lucid language and extensive citation of Nigerian case law.

The Foreword, written by Hon. Justice Kudirat M.O. Kekere-Ekun, GCON, of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, describes the work as “exceptional,” applauding its clarity, depth, and value to a broad spectrum of stakeholders.

Structured into nine well-organized chapters, the book delves into the laws, conventions, risks, and remedies associated with international maritime contracts, with an entire chapter dedicated to jurisdiction—a critical concern in maritime disputes. Visual aids, case studies, and analysis of standard forms further enhance the book’s usability as both a reference and learning tool.

Mfon Ekong Usoro, who has decades of experience in maritime law and policy, brings to this publication the insights gathered from a distinguished career in legal practice and administration, both locally and internationally.
