The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has expressed deep concern over a tragic accident that occurred on Monday, November 11, 2024, in Utu Etim Ekpo, Akwa Ibom State. A flour-laden truck, reportedly being pursued by soldiers, lost control and crashed into shops, killing three people, including a lawyer, and leaving several others severely injured.
In a statement signed by its President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, the NBA described the incident as a preventable tragedy that underscores the dangers associated with indiscriminate roadblocks, extortion at checkpoints, and reckless high-speed chases in civilian areas.
“This tragedy highlights the misuse of roadblocks and the dangerous practices by some law enforcement agents,” the NBA President said. “Many of these checkpoints, often positioned at unsafe or poorly visible locations, do more harm than good, creating risks for road users and fostering extortion rather than enhancing security.”
The NBA lamented that roadblocks are frequently used to impede traffic flow and exploit drivers, rather than for legitimate law enforcement purposes. “Experience has shown that these roadblocks are more intended for extorting drivers than ensuring public safety. Articulated vehicles often topple while navigating poorly placed obstacles, and nighttime collisions with these obstructions are becoming alarmingly common,” the statement added.
Calling for immediate reforms, the NBA urged law enforcement agencies to review current checkpoint practices and enforce stricter protocols to prioritize public safety. The association also demanded an investigation into the Utu Etim Ekpo incident, urging accountability for any security personnel whose actions contributed to the loss of lives.
“Reckless high-speed pursuits in populated areas must be strictly prohibited. Security agencies must train and retrain their personnel on proper engagement and pursuit protocols,” Osigwe emphasized.
The NBA reiterated its commitment to seeking justice for the victims of the accident and pledged to collaborate with local leaders and relevant authorities to ensure accountability. The association assured the families of the deceased, including their late colleague, of its unwavering support.
“This tragic event calls for urgent action to address the misuse of checkpoints and restore public confidence in our law enforcement institutions,” the statement concluded.
The association extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and the Utu Etim Ekpo community, praying for the souls of the departed to rest in peace.
