The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Afam Osigwe (SAN), has expressed concern over persistent attacks on legal practitioners by security agencies across the country.
Osigwe voiced these concerns on Tuesday during a courtesy visit to the Defence Headquarters in Abuja, where he met with the Chief of Defence Staff, General C.G. Musa.
In a statement issued after the meeting, Osigwe highlighted critical issues affecting the legal profession and the wider public, particularly violations of lawyers’ rights by security personnel.
The NBA President drew attention to the case of Okorie Kevin, a lawyer reportedly detained by the Nigerian Navy for over 120 days without due process or explanation.
He condemned the detention as a blatant violation of the rule of law and demanded immediate action to address the situation.
“We cannot continue to condone acts that undermine the principles of justice and due process,” Osigwe said.
Osigwe also raised concerns about extortion at military checkpoints, allegedly perpetrated by some unscrupulous personnel.
He criticised the use of collective punishment in crisis-affected communities, urging the military to adopt a more targeted approach that spares innocent civilians.
The NBA President further emphasized the need for collaboration between the association and the military to uphold justice, accountability, and respect for human rights.
Responding to the allegations, General Musa assured the NBA President that the Defence Headquarters would investigate the detention of Okorie Kevin and take appropriate action.
He noted that he was previously unaware of the case but promised immediate intervention.
General Musa reiterated the military’s commitment to a people-centric approach and adherence to rules of engagement.
On the issue of extortion, he assured Osigwe that any personnel found culpable would face strict disciplinary measures.
“The Defence Headquarters remains committed to upholding the rule of law and fostering a positive relationship with civilians, including members of the legal profession,” Musa said.
In a separate event on Tuesday, Osigwe hosted members of the NBA National Litigation Committee in Abuja, where he called for an end to police brutality against legal practitioners.
The NBA President commended the committee’s legal action against the Nigerian Police Force on behalf of Mr. Ernest Chukwuemeka Okpaga, a lawyer allegedly assaulted and unlawfully detained by officers at the National Cyber Crime Centre in Abuja.
“The commitment demonstrated by the National Litigation Committee in addressing these issues underscores the NBA’s resolve to protect the dignity and rights of legal practitioners,” Osigwe said.
Osigwe reiterated the NBA’s commitment to fostering stronger collaborations with law enforcement agencies to ensure justice and accountability.
He called for preventive mechanisms to protect lawyers and increased awareness of their rights.
“The NBA will remain steadfast in defending the rule of law and safeguarding the sanctity of the legal profession,” Osigwe concluded.
