The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has launched the National Certification Program for Data Protection Officers (DPOs), marking a significant milestone in the country’s journey toward strengthening data protection and privacy.
The program was officially unveiled by the Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, during a high-profile event that underscored Nigeria’s leadership in promoting data privacy across Africa and beyond.
The initiative aligns with NDPC’s strategic roadmap for human capital development and domestication of DPO certification. Speaking at the event, the National Commissioner and CEO of the NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, highlighted the program’s potential to create job opportunities for Nigerian youths within the data protection ecosystem. He noted that the initiative is a critical component of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, urging participants to seize the opportunity to join the global pool of certified DPOs.
In his remarks, Dr. Bosun Tijani emphasized the federal government’s commitment to equipping Nigerian youths for the digital age, describing the training program as a strategic investment. “The more connected we are, the more vulnerable we are,” he noted, stressing the growing importance of data protection in an increasingly digital world.
The event also saw the presence of Ayodele Olawande, Minister of Youth Development, and several dignitaries, including:
