Stakeholders Confer on maritime security

Contemporary Issues in Shipping & Maritime Law  in Nigeria was the topic of a public lecture held on Wednesday at the Faculty of Law Lecture University of Lagos.

Mr.  Chukwudi Ilogu, SAN,  Maritime Expert and the Senior Partner in Foundation Chambers a firm with specialty in maritime and oil and gas sector was the guest speaker at the public lecture. In his presentation, Mr Ilogu SAN emphasized the urgent need for security in Nigerian Maritime sector especially at the Nigerian Ports Authority. He noted that this would aid smooth transactions within the system. In the highlight of his speech he charged the Nigerian Bar Association to take up its role of providing the needed regulatory framework to ensure excellent running of the sector.

He noted that Maritime law is a complete system of law which covers all aspect of law locally and internationally hence the need for maritime security. He also emphasize that the policy framework should include goals, strategic objectives and policy action.

Speaking at the end of the lecture, Prof. Toyin ogundipe the deputy vice chancellor of the university (Academics and Research), applauded the organizers and the guest speaker stating that the  presentation was timely. In his words “This is a good topic, good team and good speakers”.

Another guest at the event Mr. Val Uche Obi, (SAN) in his remark noted, “I’m enlightened and I can see that there are wide range of issues in the policies and management burning in the maritime law. All these need urgent attention to help shape and change things in this country”.

A student of the Law Faculty of the institution, Fadekemi, noted that the event was an eye-opener as it has exposed the major issues & challenges in the maritime sector.

A legal practitioner who was also at the event Mr. Uche Francis said the lecture was an eye opener and applauded the organizers and the speakers. He stated that events such as this should be held periodically to keep the public informed.

Other dignitaries who grace the occasion are Prof. Ayodele Victoria Atsenuwa (Dean of the faculty of Law, Unilag), Prof. Chioma Agomo, Barr. Yinka Faronbi(Former chairman of NBA ikeja branch and Mrs. Ijeamaka Ilogu, Dr. Charles Oginbu .
