{"id":90223,"date":"2025-12-09T08:47:43","date_gmt":"2025-12-09T08:47:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dnllegalandstyle.com\/dnl\/?p=90223"},"modified":"2025-12-09T08:47:43","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T08:47:43","slug":"nitda-alerts-nigerians-on-chatgpt-vulnerability-that-enables-data-leakage-attacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dnllegalandstyle.com\/dnl\/nitda-alerts-nigerians-on-chatgpt-vulnerability-that-enables-data-leakage-attacks\/","title":{"rendered":"NITDA Alerts Nigerians On ChatGPT Vulnerability That Enables Data-Leakage Attacks"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has issued an advisory on new vulnerabilities in ChatGPT that could expose users to data-leakage attacks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>According to the advisory, researchers discovered seven vulnerabilities affecting GPT-4o and GPT-5 models that allow attackers to manipulate ChatGPT through indirect prompt injection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agency explained that hidden instructions placed inside webpages, comments, or URLs can trigger unintended commands during regular browsing,&nbsp;summarisation, or search actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cBy embedding hidden instructions in webpages, comments, or crafted URLs, attackers can cause ChatGPT to execute unintended commands simply through normal browsing, summarization, or search actions<\/em>,\u201d they stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The warning followed rising concerns about AI-powered tools interacting with unsafe web content and the growing dependence on ChatGPT for business, research, and public-sector tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NITDA added that some flaws allow the bypassing of safety controls by masking malicious content behind trusted domains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other weaknesses take advantage of markdown&nbsp;rendering&nbsp;bugs, enabling hidden instructions to pass undetected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It explained that in severe cases, attackers can poison ChatGPT\u2019s memory, forcing the system to&nbsp;retain&nbsp;malicious instructions that influence future conversations<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They&nbsp;stated&nbsp;that while OpenAI has fixed parts of the issue, LLMs still struggle to reliably separate genuine user intent from malicious data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Agency warned that these vulnerabilities could lead to a range of cybersecurity threats, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Unauthorised actions carried out by the model<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unintended exposure of user information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Manipulated or misleading outputs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Long-term\u00a0behavioural\u00a0changes caused by memory poisoning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CERRT.NG added that users may unknowingly trigger these attacks without clicking or interacting with anything, especially when ChatGPT processes search results or webpages\u00a0containing\u00a0hidden malicious instructions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It advised Nigerians, businesses, and government institutions to adopt several precautionary steps to stay safe.
