The High Court of Anambra State has restrained Governor Charles Soludo from proceeding with plans to demolish the Onitsha Main Market until a substantive legal suit challenging the move is resolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Governor Soludo had earlier disclosed plans to clear parts of the market during a meeting with community stakeholders, describing its present state as deteriorated and unattractive to customers. He noted that the once-thriving commercial hub had lost its appeal and warned that a difficult but necessary demolition exercise would be carried out to transform it into a modern facility comparable to international standards, referencing Taiwan as a model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Concerned about the implications of the proposed redevelopment, affected traders filed a suit, arguing that the demolition would cause significant economic hardship and disrupt their businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his ruling on the application brought by traders from Human Fence Zone One Line of the Onitsha Main Market, Justice J. I. Nweze directed all parties to preserve the current situation pending the hearing of the main case scheduled for March 16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Several traders who addressed reporters cautioned that any demolition at this time would worsen prevailing economic challenges and threaten their means of livelihood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The United Igbo Elders Council also urged the governor to reconsider the plan. The council suggested alternatives, including the development of extension markets or relocating certain sections, rather than a total demolition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Additionally, the group appealed to the administration of Bola Tinubu to ensure that security forces are not involved in the matter. It described the Onitsha market as a national economic asset that should not be subjected to unilateral decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One trader and resident, Jude Nwafor, advised the governor to tread carefully to avoid actions that could unsettle the improving security climate in the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
