The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), accusing it of failing to investigate claims that lawmakers tampered with key legislation. The allegations center on the removal of sections on electronic transmission of election results from the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill and unlawful changes to tax reform bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Filed last week at the Federal High Court in Abuja under suit number FHC\/ABJ\/CS\/634\/2026, SERAP is seeking a court order compelling the CCB to investigate these breaches and, where appropriate, refer violations to the Code of Conduct Tribunal. The organization argues that such steps are essential to uphold transparency, accountability, and the constitutional principle that public office is a public trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
SERAP\u2019s lawyers contend that lawmaking influenced by personal gain or conflicts of interest undermines the legitimacy of the legislative process. They say the alleged alterations to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill and the Tax Reform Laws may have been made to serve private or political interests, rather than the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Citing constitutional provisions and the Code of Conduct for Public Officers, SERAP emphasizes that public officials\u2014including legislators and executive officers\u2014are required to act with integrity and cannot place personal interests above official duties. The group also noted that a recent issue raised by Sokoto lawmaker Abdussamad Dasuki highlighted discrepancies between the tax reform bills passed by the National Assembly and the versions gazetted by the Federal Government, raising further questions about legislative compliance and legality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
