It must be established through admissible, credible, and internally consistent evidence,” the group said.

According to LOLPON, the proceedings before the UK court are narrower than the sweeping corruption allegations that have circulated publicly for years, noting that the trial primarily concerns alleged benefits linked to accommodation, travel, logistics and school fees.

The organisation argued that under the UK Bribery Act 2010, prosecutors must prove corrupt intent and improper influence tied directly to official conduct.

“What has emerged instead during proceedings is a series of troubling contradictions and evidential weaknesses,” the group alleged.

The lawyers claimed that some individuals accused of paying bribes had denied making such payments, while prosecutors reportedly acknowledged that there was no evidence Alison-Madueke awarded contracts to undeserving companies.

“This is highly significant. The case, therefore, does not rest upon proof of a direct ‘cash for contract’ arrangement,” LOLPON stated.

The group also alleged that critical reimbursement records, invoices, diaries and related documents reportedly removed during searches conducted in Abuja in 2015 were absent from the evidential record.

According to the lawyers, the missing materials weaken attempts to determine who ultimately bore certain disputed expenses now characterised as gifts.

“Once reimbursement becomes central to the case, the integrity of the supporting records becomes indispensable,” the association said.

LOLPON further raised concerns over the handling of exhibits, alleging discrepancies in the chain of custody of materials seized during investigations.

“The court reportedly heard evidence that Nigerian investigators initially documented two bags of seized materials, only for three bags to later emerge during evidential review without satisfactory explanation,” the group stated.

“Such discrepancies are not technical trivialities,” it added, arguing that unexplained inconsistencies inevitably raise concerns regarding reliability and evidential integrity.

The association also pointed to alleged contradictions involving transportation payments linked to Westminster Cars, as well as testimony surrounding luxury purchases, Harrods shopping transactions and properties reportedly associated with businessman Kola Aluko.

According to LOLPON, court proceedings reportedly showed that several payment trails were linked primarily to businessmen and related entities rather than directly to Alison-Madueke herself.

“The relevant legal question is not whether expensive items existed, but who paid for them, who owned the destination properties, and who exercised legal control over those assets,” the lawyers argued.

The legal body further questioned the reliability of some prosecution witnesses, claiming certain witnesses revised earlier assertions during cross-examination.

“One witness reportedly acknowledged that parts of his statement were drafted using language introduced by investigators rather than his own independent recollection,” the group alleged.

The association also criticised reported “cut and paste” errors involving financial figures in parts of the indictment, saying such mistakes raised concerns about preparation standards in a case of international significance.

Beyond evidential concerns, LOLPON raised objections to what it described as prolonged restrictions imposed on the former minister since her arrest in October 2015.

“More than 10 years later, she has not been convicted of any offence, yet she has remained substantially constrained within the United Kingdom throughout that period,” the organisation said.

It added that prolonged restrictions on her movement raised legitimate concerns under international fair hearing standards and human rights protections relating to liberty and security.

The lawyers also referenced Alison-Madueke’s emergence in 2014 as the first female president of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries Conference, saying her professional record required that she be treated fairly and objectively.

“That history does not place her above the law, but it does require that she be treated with fairness, objectivity, and freedom from prejudicial assumptions,” the group added.

LOLPON further alleged selective prosecution, noting that some individuals accused of providing benefits were not currently before the London court.

The association therefore called on relevant authorities to ensure that the proceedings remain guided by fairness, due process and internationally recognised standards of justice.

Alison-Madueke served as Nigeria’s petroleum minister from 2010 to 2015 under former President Goodluck Jonathan and was one of the most influential figures in Nigeria’s oil sector during that period.

Since leaving office, she has faced multiple corruption investigations in Nigeria, the United Kingdom and the United States over allegations linked to bribery, money laundering and illicit asset acquisition.

In 2023, British authorities charged the former minister with bribery-related offences tied to alleged benefits received during her tenure in office, including luxury properties, private travel arrangements, and high-value gifts allegedly provided in exchange for influence over oil and gas contracts.

The case forms part of wider international anti-corruption investigations involving Nigeria’s petroleum sector, long criticised over transparency concerns, revenue leakages and governance failures.

Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has also pursued separate civil forfeiture proceedings and corruption-related cases involving former public officials and politically exposed persons linked to the oil industry.

The League of Legal Practitioners of Nigeria on Thursday
