NBA Holds NEC Meeting in Maiduguri, Reaffirms Commitment to Unity, Security-Affected Regions

Date:

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) on Thursday, 5 February 2026, held its National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting in Maiduguri, Borno State, in a move widely regarded as symbolic of the Association’s commitment to inclusiveness, national unity, and institutional resilience.

The meeting, presided over by the NBA President, brought together national officers, branch leaders, and representatives from across the country. It marked the first time in recent years that the NEC convened in Maiduguri, a city that has endured prolonged security and humanitarian challenges.

Presenting his Executive Report to the NEC, the NBA President described the decision to hold the meeting in Maiduguri as deliberate and purposeful, noting that it was intended to recognise and appreciate lawyers from the North-East who have consistently travelled long distances under difficult circumstances to attend national meetings of the Association.

According to the report, the Maiduguri NEC meeting underscored the principle that the NBA remains one indivisible body, committed to shared responsibility across all regions of the country. The President highlighted the symbolic importance of Maiduguri as a centre of resilience and national solidarity.

The Executive Report also addressed key issues affecting the legal profession, including:

  • strengthening institutional governance within the NBA,
  • ongoing reforms and administrative initiatives,
  • professional welfare and inclusion,
  • national security concerns and their impact on access to justice, and
  • the role of the Bar in upholding the rule of law amid socio-economic and constitutional challenges.

NEC members deliberated on policy directions and resolutions aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of the Association, improving engagement with branches nationwide, and reinforcing the NBA’s voice on matters of national importance.

The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of the NBA’s commitment to defending democratic values, promoting access to justice, and ensuring that no region or segment of the profession is marginalised.
